Options Trading Tutorial

What is the best way for a college student to save money? $1000 in bank. VERY low interest rate (if any)?

Where to put it for gains (larger is better than smaller) in, say, 5 years? What are the costs and benefits of the options? CD's? Savings Accounts? Stock Market? etc.

  1. I have two CD's and the interest has paid me about 120 dollars a year in each of them. They both started with 3,000. It's not a huge jump but I was making almost nothing in interest in a savings account. I can't say anything about the stock market because I've never done that, but CD is definitely better than savings (as long as you aren't planning on taking money out of it).
  2. If you can afford to lose the money (not gamble it away), then the only solution is to invest the money for a higher return. You will never "save" your way to a decent return, if you count in the effects of inflation over time, anything less than 4% or so is actually going backward, because you have to pay taxes on all income earned. I would suggest learning about the stock market and then open an account at a place like Fidelity or Schwab, and then either pick some exchange traded funds (ETF, they are diversified like a mutual fund, but trade like a stock) or pick a few mutual funds to invest into. Spending some time now and learning how stuff works will pay off for the rest of your life. Do not go down the path of trying for the home runs with penny stocks - that is a sure ticket to losing all your money. Do it the right way, learn to invest and learn from your mistakes. As you get out of college and earn some real money, the time spent now will put you leaps ahead of your friends and put you on a solid financial path.
  3. If you have any knowledge of the stock market, I would suggest you invest in that, or find a stockbroker to invest it for you because they will choose stocks that they believe will go up and make you money. The stock market is riskier than savings accounts or CD's or bonds, but will yield much higher gains if done well.
