A foreigner receiving stock options and prefered stocks as part of a contract?

Hi, I'm on the USA on a business VISA closing some software development contracts for my company in Brazil. Some of these companies have offered us stock options and prefered stocks. Can a foreigner or his company receive stock options or prefered stocks as part of the payment for the service he'll do for his clients ? Up to now, we are paid by money transfered to our bank account. We want to receive part of it as stocks or options.
